Legend of the Green Lantern

From the pages of DC Comics comes the legend of the Green Lantern.

Now, inspired by those legends, MetalPhene has created unique jewelry for fans all over the world.

Hal Jordan

Hal Jordan was the first Green Lantern in the "Silver Age" of
DC Comics. He first appeared in SHOWCASE #22 (September-October, 1959), entitled "SOS Green Lantern".

Several of our power rings are inspired by Hal Jordan.

Origin

Hal Jordan was a test pilot. A brave man. An honest man. But still just a man.

One day, while testing a ground-based flight simulator, Hal was carried (simulator and all) to the desert location where a space craft had crashed. Within the shattered remains of the ship, Hal met a mortally wounded alien named Abin Sur.

Abin Sur revealed that he was a Green Lantern, dedicated to order, peace, and justice throughout the universe. All of this was made possible by the "power ring" that he wore - an awesome instrument limited only by the willpower of the wearer.

Since Abin Sur was mortally wounded, he had instructed his ring to seek out a suitable successor as Green Lantern of space sector 2814. It was the power of the ring that had pulled Hal to this place.

Hal took the ring and the power battery from which it was charged. Sometimes alone, and sometimes with other heroes, Hal spent years working for the Guardians of the Universe and their Green Lantern Corps.

Hal grew to be a lot more than just one of the 3,600 ring-wielding members Green Lantern Corps. Hal earned the respect of both his peers and the Guardians of the Universe, who created the Corps.

It is ironic that Hal, who was perhaps the greatest champion of the Guardians and the Corps, turned out to be their undoing. When Coast City was destroyed, Hal sought the power to resurrect the city and its inhabitants. The Guardians refused. Hal snapped and declared war on the Guardians. Hal defeated the Corps and absorbed the energies of the Central Power Battery, renaming himself Parallax.

Parallax was perhaps a villian, and perhaps just insane. But he did have numerous clashes with his replacement, Kyle Rayner and other heroes. Finally, when the Sun-Eater threatened to destroy the solar system, Hal sacrificed his life, using all his energies to reignite the Sun.

Eventually, Hal returned from the dead as Spectre.

Powers

The power ring given to Hal Jordan by Abin Sur is a tool, weapon, and shield. It emits a green energy field that can materialize objects, inflict blows, make the wearer fly, and protect him from the harsh environment of space. It is said that the power of the Green Lantern ring is limited only by the willpower of the wearer.

The ring must be recharged every 24 hours from a portable "power battery", which in turn draws energy from the Central Power Battery on the planet OA. Hal Jordan would accompany the recharging of his ring with a solemn oath:

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight!
Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power – Green Lantern’s light!

The ring does have a weakness - it is incapable of acting upon anything that is gold or yellow in color.

Spectre

(Coming soon!)

We have a ring inspired by Hal Jordan as Spectre.

Kyle Rayner

Kyle Rayner is the current Green Lantern. He first appeared in Green Lantern (second series) #48 (January 1994), entitled "Emerald Twilight Part One: The Past" - as himself. Kyle took over as GL in Green Lantern (second series) #50 (March 1994), entitled "Emerald Twilight Part Three: The Future".

Several of our power rings are inspired by Kyle Rayner.

Origin

After the destruction of Coast City, Hal Jordan went mad, killing most of the Green Lanterns and Guardians of the Universe. The last surviving Guardian, Ganthet, created a new Green Lantern ring and gave it to Kyle Rayner, a freelance artist.

As the new Green Lantern, Kyle worked with the New Titans and then the Justice League. Kyle also fought against Parallax - Hal's identity after he snapped.

Powers

Kyle's powers come from a power ring similar to that used by other members of the Green Lantern Corps - but there are some differences. Kyle's ring is keyed to his genetic signature and can only be used by him. The powers of the ring are limited only by wearer's imagination and willpower. It has no weakness against the color yellow. It has no 24 hour time limit.

John Stewart

John Stewart was first introduced in the pages of
DC Comics as an "alternate" Green Lantern, serving the Guardians of the Universe when Hal Jordan was not available. Stewart soon became a major character in his own right.

Origin

When mortally wounded Green Lantern Abin Sur crashed his space ship on Earth, he instructed his ring to find a suitable successor as Green Lantern of space sector 2814 - an honest man, without fear. The ring picked Hal Jordan.

What we didn't learn at the time was that the ring found two humans equally qualified to become the new Green Lantern. Jordan was just a little closer. Since Stewart lost out only be a geographic quirk of fate, he is well suited to carry on as a Green Lantern.

The Cartoon Network has chosen to focus on John Stewart as their Green Lantern in the ustice League Animated Series. Stewart has done a fine job, and appears to be quite popular with viewers.

Despite the current commercial success of John Stewart as Green Lantern, we haven't yet been struck by the inspiration to make a power ring for him. If you are a fan of John Stewart, and think that we should make a ring for him, please contact us.

Alan Scott

Alan Scott was the original Green Lantern in the "Golden Age" of
DC Comics. He first appeared in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940), entitled "The Green Lantern".

Origin

This origin story began long ago in rural China. A flaming green meteor crashed to earth. When people of the local villiage went to take a look, they found a deep crater. A strange voice spoke, saying
Three times shall I flame green!
First - to bring death!
Second - to bring life!
Third - to bring power!

The villagers ran away in fear, except for Chang, a lamp maker who dabbled in sorcery. Chang took part of the strange green meteor, working its metal into a lamp. This angered the villagers, who killed Chang and burned his books. In the midst of this chaos, the new lamp flared up with a brilliant green flame and killed the attackers. "First - to bring death!"

The lamp passed from hand to hand over the centuries. Eventually, it was given to a Mr. Billings, inmate of the Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Billings had killed his stockbroker after the stock market crash of 1929. As occupational therapy, Billings worked on the old Chinese lamp, reworking it into a modern railroad lantern. When the job was complete, the lamp flamed with green light that surrounded Billings and cured him of his madness. Billings left Arkham Asylum a new man, fulfilling the prophecy: "Second - to bring life!"

Alan Scott was an engineer who had designed a trestle bridge in the American West. When the bridge was finished, Scott rode the first train across the bridge. The bridge was destroyed, bombed by a competitor who had lost the construction contract. As the train and those aboard plunged into the canyon, Scott happened to grab the lantern. Scott awoke amongst the wreckage, and the green lantern's flame spoke to Scott, telling him much of its story.

Scott took on the identity of Green Lantern, fighting crime, injustice, and corruption - the dark things of the night. Thus was the prophecy fulfilled: "Third - to bring power!"

Despite the long history of Alan Scott as Green Lantern, we haven't yet been struck by the inspiration to make a power ring for him. If you are a fan of Alan Scott, and think that we should make a ring for him, please contact us.

Powers

Alan Scott's powers come from the Green Flame of Life. The main repository of the Flame is the railroad lantern. Scott took some of the metal from the lantern to fashion a ring The ring must be recharged every 24 hours by touching it to the lantern.

Willpower is the flame of the green lantern. So long as Scott has faith in himself and willpower, he can accomplish miracles.

The ring enables Scott to fly, walk through walls, and turn invisible. The ring gives Scott imunity to metal, such as bullets and knives, but does not give super strength.

The power of the ring has a weakness to anything made of wood.

Alan Scott would accompany the recharging of his ring with a solemn oath:

And I shall shed my light over dark evil,
for the dark things cannot stand the light,
the light of the Green Lantern!

Green Lantern Corps

The Green Lantern Corps is an organization of 3,600 officers who patrol the universe to enforce order, peace, and justice. These officers are known as "Green Lanterns". They come from every race and species of sapient beings.

Each Green Lantern wears a "power ring" - an awesome instrument capable of transforming the wearer's willpower into a green energy field that do almost anything. The power ring must be periodically recharged from a "power battery" that draws power from a central power battery on the planet OA, home of the Corps.

During normal duties, each Green Lantern patrols an assigned "Space Sector", although some tasks require that individual officers team up in small or large groups.

The Corps was created by the Guardians of the Universe.

Guardians of the Universe

The Guardians of the Universe are a long-lived (some say immortal) race of short, blue-skinned men.

In order to promote order, peace, and justice throughout the universe, the Guardians created the Green Lantern Corps.

We have a power ring inspired by the Guardians of the Universe.

Sinestro

Sinestro was a talented and respected Green Lantern. But it turned out that he brought peace and order to his sector by ruthlessly crushing anyone who opposed his absolute rule. When the
Guardians of the Universe discovered this, they stripped Sinestro of his ring and membership in the Green Lantern Corps.

Sinestro became the sworn enemy of the Guardians and the Corps. He formed an alliance with the Weaponers of the antimatter universe of Quard. They gave him a yellow power ring, which the renegade Green Lantern uses to fight the good guys.

We have a power ring inspired by Sinestro.
